Martial Arts Equipment for Mixed Martial Arts

A fighter looking to start in the world of MMA will have to ensure they have the right gear to start with. This can include boxing gloves, MMA gloves, shorts and more.

Wherever a person may be, there will likely be a number of people in the area that are interested in mixed martial arts. This is a great thing as there has never been a greater time to pursue training for octagon or cage fighting. It's quite easy to find an MMA gym or dojo and there is an abundance of mma equipment on the market. Here's a rundown of some of the gear a mixed martial artist may want to consider grabbing when training for their first fight.

MMA Gloves

Quite possibly the most valuable piece of gear a fighter can purchase, MMA gloves slip over the hands and form a pad with which to strike. They serve the purpose of protecting the fingers when striking as well as softening the blows slightly for the target. They're quite light and thinner than boxing gloves.

Having a personal set of gloves is a great idea as the fighter will get used to their weight and how best to strike while wearing their gloves, as well as what it feels like to make contact with something while wearing them. Any kind of advantage or experience a fighter can take with them into a bout will be useful.

Finally, it's great to have a set of gloves for hygiene reasons. Mixed martial arts gyms may have gloves that can be borrowed, but they're likely to be soaked with sweat from other people! There's no substitute for having a high quality, clean pair of one's own.

Boxing Gloves

Although no MMA fighter will actually compete with boxing glove on, they are a great tool to have for training purposes. Boxing gloves are heavier than MMA gloves and have far more padding. This ensures that the person training can hit harder for longer without fear of damaging their hands.

The second benefit is that because of their softness, boxing gloves are very useful for both training evasion techniques as well as how to take a hit. With some headgear and a sparring partner, a mixed martial artist can learn to dodge and protect him or herself from blows without risking head injury or numerous nosebleeds.

MMA Shorts

There are many choices of clothing to train and fight in. The major virtues a piece of clothing will want to hit are to be light to move in and breathable. It will do the fighter no good to be dragged down by a pair of heavy shorts or pants.

Luckily, MMA shorts are designed to be both breathable and easy to move in. There are tons available to choose from, some even promoted by famous MMA athletes. A good pair will also help the fighter to feel the part when they're stepping up to train.

Punch Bag

Although there are numerous aides for MMA training, a punch bag is perhaps the most valuable. No other piece of MMA equipment will help the fighter to hone their punches quite like a heavy bag. A new fighter will have to spend hours practicing their strikes to ensure their wrists are straight and that they have a full understanding of their personal range. Although they can sometimes be expensive, a punch bag will be an investment the MMA fighter will never regret!

The explosion in popularity of MMA is fantastic for the martial arts community. At this point in time, MMA gyms are packed with people learning the ins and outs of combat and what it's like to mix it up in the ring or arena. The new fighter should be cautious to ensure their safety and one of the best ways to do that is to ensure that they have some quality MMA equipment to train with.
